Google's new not-Nexus phones may be called Pixel and Pixel XL

Remember that report that claimed that Google’s upcoming Sailfish and Marlin Nexus phones may not carry the Nexus name? Well now we know what name they might go by.

A new report claims that the Sailfish and Marlin will be called “Pixel” and “Pixel XL”, respectively, when they launch. However, there’s still no word on when exactly that launch will happen or how much either phone will cost when they are released.

Google has launched a few Pixel devices in the past. The first two were high-end Chromebooks meant as developer-centric reference devices for the Chrome OS platform, while the latest device to carry the Pixel name is the Pixel C, a high-end Android tablet.

To date, the “Pixel” name has been reserved for devices that Google had a heavy influence on. That name could fit for these devices considering the rumors that we’ve heard about them so far, including that they’ll lack any HTC branding and that they could end up having a Google “G” logo on their backside. All of that suggests that these could be the most Google-y Nexus-but-not-Nexus phones yet, so perhaps Google thought that it was a good time to make them Pixel phones to signify Google’s increased influence.

What do you think of this rumor? Do you like the names Pixel and Pixel XL for these upcoming phones?
