Sony to 'defocus' mobile efforts in U.S., India, and other countries, leak shows

It’s been a while since Sony had any major presence in the U.S., but according to a new leak, the presence that they do have could soon get smaller.

Slides from a recent Sony Corporation investor day have been leaked by Xperia Blog, and one slide shows that Sony is planning a “strategic refocusing.” Specifically, Sony is planning to defocus in China, India, the U.S., and Brazil. Meanwhile, the company will push for more growth in East Asia (including Japan), Europe, and the Middle East.

The news is disappointing for folks in China, India, the U.S., and Brazil, as more competition is always a good thing. As I said before, though, Sony hasn’t had a huge presence in the U.S. for a while now, especially when it comes to the carrier stores, which is really where you need to be if you want to do well in the U.S. Sony has been selling most of its recent phones unlocked to U.S. consumers, and that’s been nice for us enthusiasts, but it’s not likely to gain them any real market share.

Sony’s new Xperia X phones did recently become available for pre-order in the U.S., so any Sony fans in the U.S. can at least get their hands on those devices.
