Android N details unveiled at Google I/O

Google I/O’s keynote is currently underway at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. A lot of big, exciting news has been rumored to break during this keynote, a few of which surround more details on the next version of Android, “Android N”. The first rumor we hoped to quash is exactly what the “N” stands for. Unfortunately no name was revealed, but that’s because no name has actually been chosen yet. Instead, Google is allowing creative minds to throw their own name suggestions into the hat by visiting android.com/n.

We have already been given a sneak preview of what to expect out of changes that come with Android N thanks to early developer previews. Changes include a refined notification system with minimized quick settings and inline replies, native split-screen and picture-in-picture support, better battery management with a more efficient “Doze” feature, and improvements to the Google Now launcher. Oh yeah, and some sweet new emoji redesigns.

Today’s keynote also brought some new information about Android N’s features. In addition to what we already knew, Android N will also feature seamless automatic updates, a much-needed “Clear All” button, and native virtual reality support called "Daydream", complete with new headset and controller references designed by Google for manufacturers to create an optimal VR experience.

As for a release date, Google announced that we can expect Android N to begin officially rolling out sometime later this summer. However, Google did mention that they will be opening a new beta program that you can try out if you'd rather not wait, which should be available later today. This beta is meant for everybody interested, not just developers. However, the beta program is only available for certain Nexus devices and the Pixel C.
