Verizon says that it's 'not going to entertain' launching new unlimited data plan

Earlier this month, AT&T surprised us all when it revealed that it would be launching a new unlimited data plan, years after killing off its original unlimited offering. The move may have prompted some to wonder if Verizon, too, would begin offering a new unlimited data plan, and today we got our answer.

Verizon CFO Fran Shammo says that right now, the big red carrier has no plans to bring back its unlimited data plan. “At this point, we are not going to entertain unlimited,” Shammo told CNET, adding that Verizon will be conservative with the number of promos that it offers in the near future. “Promotions come and go. We can’t react to everything in the marketplace,” he explained.

We often see AT&T and Verizon launch similar promos and make similar price changes, so it’s understandable that some folks would think that Verizon might launch an unlimited data plan to counter AT&T’s offering. Apparently that won’t be the case, though, meaning the only folks with unlimited data on Verizon will be those that are paying $50 per month to keep their grandfathered plan. This news is probably a bummer to some, but because AT&T’s new unlimited data plan is a limited time offer that’s only available to folks that also subscribe to TV service from AT&T as well, Verizon likely doesn’t feel much pressure to respond with its own new plan.
