Apple asking for nearly $180 million in additional damages from Samsung

The Apple-Samsung conflict continues to heat up this month. A couple of weeks after Samsung filed an appeal of an Apple design patent to the US Supreme Court, Apple has filed back by asking for more money from Samsung.

Apple claims that Samsung owes it almost $180 million on top of the $548 million in damages that Samsung already agreed to pay. Apple is asking for this $180 million in supplemental damages because it says that five Samsung phones that violated its design patents remained on sale after the August 2012 court decision that went in Apple’s favor. The five phones in question are the Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy S II T-Mobile, DROID Charge, and Galaxy Prevail.

In addition to the $178.6 million that Apple wants in supplemental damages for those five phones, the Cupertino firm is also requesting around one million dollars in interest. That brings the final total that Apple wants from Samsung to nearly $180 million.

Judge Lucy Koh granted Apple’s motion for seeking this extra $180 million on December 23. It remains to be seen if the court will actually make Samsung pay Apple the additional cash, and so far neither company has offered comment on the matter. Considering Samsung’s recent appeal, though, I’m betting that the company isn’t going to just agree to fork over another $180 million on top of the $548 million that it’s already paid to Apple. So it looks like this legal battle between Apple and Samsung, which started in 2011, will keep going strong in 2016.
