Google begins backing RCS messaging standard, acquires Jibe Mobile

Text messaging isn’t a terribly exciting topic in mobile, but that’s been changing recently as Rich Communications Services (RCS) have become a topic of conversation. T-Mobile recently began deploying RCS using its Advanced Messaging service, and now Google is getting behind RCS, too.

Google today announced that it’s getting behind RCS in a couple of ways. First up, it says that it’s working with its partners, including carriers and device makers, to help implement RCS and speed up its deployment.

Google also revealed that its announced Jibe Mobile, a company that’s been working with RCS since 2010. Under Google, the Jibe Mobile team will continue to work with carriers to deploy RCS and receive help from Google with their efforts.

Compared to messaging services like iMessage, Hangouts, BBM, WhatsApp, and others, text messaging is pretty lacking, missing features like real-time chat and high-res photos. So far, T-Mobile is the only major carrier to start pushing RCS, and it’s only available on a handful of phones on T-Mo’s network. With Google backing RCS and working with partners on its deployment, though, we could soon see RCS adoption grow significantly.
