When the OnePlus One launched last year, it did so with an invitation system that made a lot of folks endure lengthy waits just to be able to buy the device. The controversial invite system returned with the OnePlus 2, and while OnePlus promised that it’d be much easier to score an invite and subsequently get a phone, that hasn’t been the case. Now OnePlus is apologizing for the issues.
OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has written a lengthy apology in the OnePlus forums, saying that he’s sorry for letting down would-be OnePlus 2 buyers and making them wait weeks for the OnePlus 2 to begin shipping in meaningful quantities. “We simply messed up again and apologize for that,” Pei says, adding that “hardware is extremely hard” and that there are a lot of factors to account for when shipping a phone.
Pei goes on to say that OnePlus doesn’t intend to make promises about future launches like it did with the OnePlus 2, which launched on August 11 but only began shipping in large quantities this week.
In order to make up for this latest delay, Pei says that OnePlus is going to make it up to the company’s fans. One idea that’s being considered is hosting open sales of the OnePlus 2 for an hour in either late September or early October. Nothing’s confirmed yet, though, because OnePlus needs to examine its production and determine when it can actually hold open sales.
OnePlus caught a lot of flak for the release of the OnePlus One, including for its invite system and some of the questionable promos that followed. While there haven’t been any questionable promos with the OnePlus 2, the phone has still be extremely difficult for most folks to buy, with invites seemingly going out in a trickle. That’s pretty disappointing for anyone hoping to buy a OnePlus 2, especially considering how heavily OnePlus hyped its phone in the months leading up to its “launch.” It sounds like OnePlus is finally starting to ramp up production of the OnePlus 2, though, so hopefully we’ll start to see more invites going out in the coming days and weeks.
