Apple Watch getting new finishes and bands, watchOS 2 coming September 16

The Apple Watch is still a fairly new device, having launched less than six months ago, so it’s no surprise that Apple didn’t unveil a new model at today’s event. There is some Apple Watch news to share, though.

First up, Apple has announced two new anodized aluminum Apple Watch Sport models. They’ll be available in gold and rose gold, just like the Apple Watch Edition versions, but the new Sport models will start at $349 rather than $10,000. The gold and rose gold models will be available in 38mm and 42mm sizes and will start at $349 and $399, respectively, and they'll start shipping today.

Apple also showed off a new Apple Watch Hermes, which comes with a special Hermes watch face and hand-stitched leather bands. The Apple Watch Hermes will launch in select stores in October.

Also of note are new Apple Watch Sport bands. Apple is adding to the five existing Apple Watch Sport bands — white, black, blue, green, and pink — with new vibrant and pastel colors. Some of the colors include red, orange, and dark blue.

Then there’s watchOS 2. The next major version of Apple’s watchOS adds many new features. For example, watchOS 2 includes third-party complications, allowing non-Apple apps to add little widgets to your watch face. watchOS 2 also includes support for native apps, meaning that your apps won’t be run on your iPhone and then beamed to your watch, as well as some new watch faces. With watchOS 2, you’ll be able set one of your photos or an entire album as your face. One other notable feature of watchOS 2 is nightstand mode, which will appear when the watch is plugged in and on its side and show details like the time, date, and your alarms.

Apple’s watchOS 2 will launch September 16.
