I love trivia games — whether they are in electronic or board game format — so I was pleased to take look at QuizzleMe, the social trivia game from Cow54. Available for both iOS and Android, the free QuizzleMe app allows you to take part in single player or one-on-one quiz modes and put your knowledge to the test.
When you first open the QuizzleMe app, you’ll be prompted to log in with Facebook or begin playing without connecting to the social network. Once you’re in, you’ll be able to pick a single player game, a game with a Facebook friend, or draw a random opponent. You’ll select a topic and answer some questions on that topic.
The variety of topics is impressive. With quizzes spanning General Knowledge, Sports, Geography, Music, TV & Film, Science, History and more, there’ll be a category you’re interested in and want to compete at. In each category you can drill down further, selecting a more specific set of questions like Country Flags in Geography or Famous Explorers in History. There are ‘Trending Topics’ suggested to you, but I’m not sure how often these are updated as Wimbledon was suggested frequently during my testing despite the tennis tournament being over weeks ago.
When you start a quiz, like other apps of its kind, you’ll be given 5 questions to answer and 10 seconds for each one. The faster you provide the correct answer, the higher your score and the more coins you earn at the end of that round. Questions are text, image or audio based so you could be answering based on a photography or logo, an audio clip or a straight-up written question.
Once you find a few topics you are interested in, it’s easy to get sucked into QuizzleMe — it’s fun and very addictive. Playing against another person is also addictive as that element of direct competition keeps you coming back to the game. One-on-one games are time-shifted so you don’t have to both be playing live meaning you can submit your answers and wait to see how well your opponent does later when they take the quiz.
Coins, as mentioned above, are earned for every single- or multi-player game you play. Earned coins can be used to pass questions you don’t know the answer to or buy power ups (to give you more time or a second shot at a question) but, as is often the case with freemium apps, they can be spent way quicker than they can be earned. Fortunately, spending coins isn’t essential in order to enjoy the game and I rarely spent any.
The UI of QuizzleMe is a little uninspiring. It’s responsive enough but seems blocky and lacks a little polish. Once you select a quiz topic, there’s also no easy way to quit that topic and select another — you simply have to follow that quiz through to the end which is a little annoying. The soundtrack, which is very much reminiscent of TV quiz shows, grates a little after a while but it can be turned off in the app’s settings.
For fans of trivia and quiz apps, QuizzleMe is a great little time killer. It might need a little work and some polish, but it’s fun and addictive to play, especially across platforms with friends. The number of topics available is excellent meaning there is something of interest for the majority of people.
