Cyanogen partners with Truecaller to build caller ID, spam blocking to its dialer app

After partnering with Boxer for an improved built-in email app, Cyanogen has announced that it’s now partnering with another firm to beef up its phone dialer.

Cyanogen is teaming up with Truecaller to improve the phone dialer in Cyanogen OS by adding features like spam blocking, the ability to tag unknown callers in both incoming calls and the call history, and even details on how many times a phone number has been marked as spam by others. These features will all be built into the native dialer in Cyanogen OS, so you won’t need to install a new app to get them. It’s worth noting that the feature is opt-in, though, so you won’t be forced to use Truecaller if you’d rather not.

There’s no word yet on when Truecaller’s features will begin appearing in Cyanogen OS, but the features will come built into future Cyanogen OS devices. Meanwhile, existing Cyanogen OS products will gain Truecaller support through an over the air update.

Cyanogen is on a quest to wrest Android away from Google and improve upon the mobile OS, and this latest move furthers Cyanogen’s effort. Certainly users can install their own phone dialer from Google Play, but Cyanogen is simplifying the process by teaming up with an establish caller ID player and building the feature directly into its OS. What’s nice about these features is that because users can report calls as spam, the list of numbers identified as spam can quickly and constantly be updated.
