Sprint posts Q4 fiscal 2014 numbers, stays ahead of T-Mobile in total subs

Sprint today reported its earnings for the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2014, which came to an end on March 31.

During that three-month period, Sprint says that it added 211,000 postpaid customers, an improvement from the 231,000 postpaid subscribers that it lost year-over-year. Sprint also notes that it lost 201,000 postpaid phone users in the quarter, though that’s an improvement compared to the 693,000 it lost in the year-ago quarter. Prepaid adds for the quarter finished at 546,000. Sprint’s total net additions for Q4 2014 finished at 1.2 million.

At the end of the quarter, Sprint had 57.1 million customers, keeping it barely ahead of T-Mobile’s 56.8 million subs. That means that Sprint is still the number three carrier in the U.S.

Looking at its network, Sprint says that its 4G LTE coverage now reaches almost 280 million people in teh U.S. Sprint also highlighted several cities in which its performance has improved, according to research firm RootMetrics. Those areas include Pittsburgh, Penn., where it went from sharing third place for reliability and call performance to sharing first, and Las Vegas, Nev., where it went from fourth in overall performance to sharing first.

Finally, Sprint’s financials for the quarter include total operating revenues of $8.3 billion, an operating income of $318 million, and a net loss of $224 million.

It looks like this quarter was a decent one for Sprint. The big yellow carrier saw some customer gains that helped to keep it ahead of T-Mobile for another quarter, and while it did post a net loss that’s greater than it was in the year-ago quarter, the loss is improved from the $2.38 billion that it lost in the previous quarter.
