We already know that Google has packed a number of goodies into Android 5.1, but apparently it’s managed to sneak others in that are just now being discovered.
A new Google VPN feature has been found inside Android 5.1. Pocketables found that in order to access the Google VPN app, you first need to dive into the Apps section of your Settings and then find Google Connectivity Services. You then create a shortcut to the app using an app like Nova Launcher or QuickShortcutMaker and place it on your homescreen. When you click the app, you’ll be given a message that reads:
“Google VPN
To help protect you on open Wi-Fi networks, your data will be transmitted securely through a Google VPN.”
Unfortunately, the Learn More link redirects you to a regular Google support page. Selecting Got It will take you to a screen that can be used to connect to a VPN, but as of this writing, the feature doesn’t actually work. Bummer.
Using a virtual private network (VPN) will let you use an unsecure Wi-Fi network without having to worry about anyone snooping on your browsing. It’s not clear when or if Google might launch this feature to the public, but it’s possible that it could be part of that Google MVNO that’s rumored to use Sprint, T-Mobile, and Wi-Fi networks for your connectivity. Using Google VPN for that program could ensure that users’ phone calls, messages, and browsing habits are secure no matter what Wi-Fi they find themselves on.
