Apple beat out Samsung in Q4 2014 smartphone sales, says research firm

Samsung and Apple have long been duking it out for mobile dominance, and according to a new report, Apple won the most recent battle.

Research firm Gartner reports that Apple sold more smartphones than Samsung in the fourth quarter of 2014. It’s said that Apple sold 74.8 million phones in the final months of 2014, while Samsung sold 73,0 million. During the same period in 2013, Samsung sold 83.3 million phones while Apple sold 50.2 million. The three manufacturers that got closest to Apple and Samsung in terms of Q4 2014 sales were Lenovo with 24.3 million, Huawei with 21.0 million, and Xiaomi with 18.6 million.

Things were a bit different in 2014 as a whole. Gartner reports that of the 1.2 billion smartphones sold in 2014, Samsung moved 307.6 million, while Apple sold 191.4 million. Rounding out the top five was Lenovo with 81.4 million, Huawei with 68.0 million, and LG with 57.7 million.

As I mentioned before, Apple and Samsung have been dominating the mobile space for a while now, trading blows with new smartphones like the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S5. It remains to be seen when we’ll see another manufacturer rise up and challenge these two behemoths, but there’s certainly no shortage of companies that are making an effort to get in the fight.
