Microsoft, Samsung strike a deal in Android royalty quarrel

Last year, Microsoft hit Samsung with a lawsuit over royalties that Samsung was supposed to pay Microsoft as part of a patent cross-licensing deal from 2011. Fast-forward to today and the two have announced that they’ve reached a deal.

Microsoft and Samsung have announced that they’ve ended their contract dispute and their ICC arbitration. Unfortunately for anyone interested in exactly what happened, the two companies would only say that their deal are “confidential.” The full statement from Samsung’s Jaewan Chi and Microsoft’s David Howard is as follows:

“Samsung and Microsoft are pleased to announce that they have ended their contract dispute in U.S. court as well as the ICC arbitration. Terms of the agreement are confidential.”

Considering how many lawsuits and court battles we saw flying around in the mobile space a few years ago, it’s nice to see that Microsoft and Samsung work their issues out without having to get too deep into the lawsuit. It’s kind of a bummer that we didn’t get any additional details on the agreement, but hey, at least we don’t have to hear about a long court battle for months on end instead.
