Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 update rollout begins in Russia

Following the Galaxy S4 Google Play edition’s update to Android 5.0 last month, Samsung has started pushing Lollipop to the regular version of the GS4.

PhoneDog reader Serkan recently began receiving Android 5.0.1 on his Samsung Galaxy S4 (model GT-I9500) in Russia. The update is a biggie, weighing in at a whopping 1049.17MB, and requiring around 3GB of memory to complete. Additionally, the update will consume around 950MB of your storage once it’s done installing.

Once the update is complete, you’ll find Lollipop goodies like lock screen notifications. Samsung also says that certain apps that were preinstalled, like Play Books, will be removed in order to help optimize the GS4’s memory.

Right now it looks like the Galaxy S4’s Android 5.0 update is only pushing out in Russia. The good news is that this rollout shows that Samsung is making good progress with its GS4 Lollipop update and that releases in other markets could begin soon.

Thanks, Serkan!
