Newer Apple iBeacon hardware shown off by user manual

You know those iBeacon devices that Apple uses in its stores to guide shoppers, provide indoor maps, and more? Well Apple registered for a new iBeacon model with the FCC in mid-2014, and now the user manual for the device has been published, revealing what the hardware looks like in the process.

As you can see in the image above, the iBeacon is a small hockey puck-shaped object it an Apple logo on its face. Around back is a threaded hole for mounting the iBeacon to a wall, a status LED, a microUSB port for charging, and a side switch. That switch allows the iBeacon to be turned on and off or reprogrammed using an iBeacon app. There aren’t really any spec details available for the device, but we do know that it features Bluetooth Low Energy.

Since most of us regular folk can’t actually buy this iBeacon, this “leak” mostly just serves to give us a peek at some Apple stuff that we normally wouldn’t see. Considering how secretive Apple normally is, that’s exciting for anyone with an interest in the Cupertino firm or consumer-tracking devices.
