Earlier this year, Google acquired music streaming service Songza but didn’t provide any details on its future plans. Fast forward to today and we’ve finally learned Google’s plans for Songza’s tech.
Google Play Music now integrates with Songza, giving users easy access to curated music stations that are based on whatever they may be doing at any give time. Play Music subscribers can open the app, select whatever activity they may be involved in and then they’ll get a music station full of tunes appropriate for what they’re doing. Google says that its stations are curated by a group of music experts that include “DJs, musicians, music critics and ethnomusicologists.”
These curated stations can be downloaded for offline listening, and you can also start a new station based on any song that’s served up to you in a playlist. Google says that the activity-based stations will be available today in its Android and iOS apps as well as on the web.
In addition to its new Songza-like activity playlists, Google Play Music has gotten a refreshed “Listen Now” page that utilizes Google’s Material Design. The page features larger images, bolder colors, smooth transitions and easier methods of discovering new music.
