Google still hasn’t come forward with its Google Glass public launch plans, but if you want the piece of headwear and don’t want to wait for the consumer release, you can now score your very own piece of Glass.
The Google Glass Explorer Edition is now available in the Google Play Store. Pricing is set at $1500, just like it has been since Glass’s launch, and the unit is available in Charcoal, Tangerine, Cotton, Shale and Sky Blue color options.
New Glass Explorer Edition orders are expected to leave Google’s warehouse in 1-2 business days. Google is also throwing in a free frame or shade with each purchase. There are four frame options — curve, split, bold and thin — and three shade options — active, classic and edge. Sold on their own, the frames and shades cost $225 and $150, respectively. Google is also selling Glass earbuds that are available in an $85 stereo configuration or a $50 mono unit.
The Google Glass Explorer Edition is still the early, non-public version of Google’s headwear, and the $1500 price tag will still be a big barrier of entry for many. That said, Glass has been somewhat tough to come by in the past, requiring invitations or winning contests to be able to buy a unit. Now anyone can get a unit directly from the Play Store, which shows that Google is ready to expand its Explorer test further.
