Google blocks off September 15 with event in India, likely for Android One

On June 25, during a flurry of new Android-related announcements made by Google at their I/O event, Android One was officially unveiled. It's an effort by the company to offer a blueprint for low-cost Android-based smartphones, all of which would be running stock software right out of the box. It's never been a secret that India would be a big focus for Android One, and now a new event announced by Google is giving us a good indication that the devices are coming sooner, rather than later.

According to invites being sent out now, Google is aksing those who receive it to "block your date" for September 15, where they will have something to show off beginning at 12 noon, local time. While there's nothing concrete on the invite to suggest what might be showcased, the safe bet is Android One, especially with the rumors that have surfaced since its unveiling of devices heading to that particular market.

Google is said to be gearing up for a big media and marketing push for Android One in India soon, and if the invite is any indication, that could be right around the corner. As far as manufacturing partners go, Android One is seeing support from Spice, Karbonn, and Micromax. And while the stock software will be present right from the start, and the devices will receive automatic updates like Nexus-branded devices do now, the manufacturers will be able to include their own applications.

Micromax's first device is said to feature things like dual-SIM support, microSD card support, and an FM radio. It is also said to cost under $100.
