Moto X wood backs available for free through Aug. 21

We’re no strangers to Moto X promotions. It seems that Motorola is offering a discount on its still-flagship smartphone at least once a month, sometimes more. That trend continues today, but rather than discounting the phone itself, this time Motorola is cutting the price of one of its add-ons.

Moto X buyers can add a wood back to their customized device for free from now through Aug. 21. Adding a bamboo back cost an additional $100 when the bamboo rear panel was first added in Dec. 2013, but Motorola cut that price to $25 when it added more wood back options in January 2014.

The successor to the Moto X is expected to make its debut on Sept. 4, and it’s likely that it’ll go on sale shortly thereafter. As a result, it makes sense that Motorola would want to move as many original Moto X parts ahead of that date since it’s unlikely that they’ll be compatible with the new model. And while the Moto X is getting a bit long in the tooth, it’s still a respectable, affordable smartphone that’ll get Android L.
