Sprint reports improved subscriber losses, record operating income for Q1 FY14

The earnings march carries on this morning with Sprint’s report for the results of its first quarter of fiscal 2014.

Sprint says that it’s full platform saw a net loss of 220,000 customers during the quarter, an improvement from the 383,000 customers it lost in the previous quarter and the 520,000 customers it lost 1 year ago. At the end of the quarter, Sprint finished with 54.6 million customers. That number includes 30.3 million postpaid subscribers, 15.2 million prepaid users and 9.1 million wholesale subs.

On the hardware side of things, Sprint reports that it sold nearly 5 million smartphones in the quarter, a number that represents 87 percent of total handset sales for the quarter. Around 7 percent of Sprint postpaid customers upgraded their devices during the quarter.

Finally, Sprint’s report shows that it pulled in a net income of $23 million for the quarter, including an operating income of $519 million. Dan Hesse and Co. say that that last figure is its best quarterly operating income in more than 7 years.
