T-Mobile 'Device Unlock' app to let users remotely unlock phones, Samsung Galaxy Avant to support it

T-Mobile’s made some big Un-carrier moves in the past, including its JUMP! upgrade program and offering to pay the ETFs of switchers. Now it looks like T-Mo is planning another new feature that we’ve never seen from a U.S. carrier before.

Documents shared by our pals at TmoNews show that T-Mobile is prepping an app called “Device Unlock” that lets users unlock their device directly from the app. The docs show that users can remotely request an unlock for their Android device and apply it from within the app. The app apparently supports both temporary and permanent unlocks.

As for which devices will support the Device Unlock app, the only one that we know of for sure right now is the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Avant. Intel suggests that the Avant will launch on July 30, but apparently T-Mobile couldn’t wait that long to begin getting the device’s support pages ready, because there are already a number of Avant docs available on T-Mo’s site.

According to T-Mobile’s site, the Galaxy Avant will offer the following specs:

  • 4.5-inch qHD (960x540) LCD display
  • 1.2GHz quad-core processor
  • 5-megapixel rear, VGA front camera
  • 16GB storage
  • microSD slot with support for cards up to 64GB
  • 1.5GB of RAM
  • 4G LTE connectivity
  • 2100mAh battery
  • Android 4.4 KitKat

Overall the Galaxy Avant looks like a fairly mid-range offering. The big news here is T-Mobile’s Device Unlock app, which will make it easier than ever for consumers to unlock their phones for use on another carrier. While calling a carrier and requesting an unlock code isn’t terribly difficult, this Device Unlock app will help to streamline the process and make it even simpler.
