Earlier this month, LG began accepting pre-orders in Korea for a new variant of the G3 dubbed the “LG G3 Cat.6.” Fast-forward nearly two weeks later and the Life’s Good crew has finally decided to come clean with an official announcement for this new device.
The LG G3 Cat.6 is similar to the regular G3 that launched earlier this year, save for two major upgrades. The first is its upgraded LTE-Advanced Cat. 6 modem that gives the G3 variant support for peak download speeds of up to 225Mbps.
In addition to its LTE-A modem, the LG G3 Cat.6 sports a 2.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor. The regular G3’s processor is a quad-core Snapdragon 801 chip. Outside of the upgraded CPU and modem, the LG G3 Cat.6’s specs are similar to the OG G3:
- 5.5-inch 2560x1600 Quad HD IPS display
- 13-megapixel rear camera
- Laser Auto Focus
- 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera
- 32GB storage
- microSD slot with support for cards up to 128GB
- 3GB RAM
- 3000mAh battery
- Shine Gold, Silk White and Metallic Black color options
- Android 4.4.2 with LG tweaks like Smart Alerts and Smart Keyboard
As for a release, the machine-translated announcement suggests that an LG G3 Cat.6 launch date has yet to be determined. There’s also no word yet on when or if the device might make it out of Korea. Of course, the G3 Cat.6’s LTE-A support wouldn’t do much good in most countries since the service isn’t terribly widespread yet. I’m sure that many folks would appreciate having the upgraded Snapdragon 805 chip to help push all of the pixels on the G3 Cat.6’s screen, though.
