Ever since BlackBerry gave us our first official look at the Passport last month, the company has been eager to show off the upcoming smartphone and tell us all about what makes it great. That trend continues today, with BlackBerry authoring a blog post that explains why we should be interested in its newest piece of kit.
Over on the Inside BlackBerry blog, BlackBerry says that the Passport’s size and form factor will “open new doors of opportunity.” The company suggests that the rectangle form factor is overdone at this point and that it may be “limiting innovations.”
Being shaped like a square is good for the Passport’s display, too, says BlackBerry. The device’s 4.5-inch square screen offers viewing space that can match up with a 5-inch display, BlackBerry claims while providing a better viewing experience. It does this by showing 60 characters in a line, which is closer to the “optimal” number of 66 than rectangular smartphones and their approximately 40 characters per line.
With its square shape and display as well as its touch-enabled keyboard, the BlackBerry Passport looks like a pretty interesting device. We’ll have to wait until its launch in September to see how it actually performs, but with the Passport and the trackpad-toting Classic, BlackBerry looks like it’s got itself a two-pronged plan of attack for the latter half of 2014.
