Big cellphone legal news today, as the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that police officers cannot search a person’s handset without first obtaining a search warrant.
The Supreme Court explained that because phones are so powerful and can hold so much data, police need to get a warrant before they’re allowed to search through a person’s device. Previously, the court said that police could search through whatever was in a person’s pockets to protect the officers’ safety and to prevent any evidence tampering.
This Supreme Court decision is a pretty major reversal from the previous law about cellphone searches, and I’m sure it’s one that many mobile users will appreciate. What will be interesting is seeing how states and politicians react to the ruling in the coming days.
