Samsung shows off tablet with 4K resolution

Earlier this year, Samsung launched some new Android tablets with high-res 2560x1600 displays. That’s a pretty high-resolution for the tablet market, but apparently Samsung’s cooking up some hardware with even higher-res displays.

Samsung was present at the French Open at Roland Garros toting a tablet with a 12-inch 4K (4096x2160) resolution. The prototype slate was being used as part of an LTE broadcast demo, and while the video stream being used on it was only 720p, Samsung did pull up additional windows to show off its true resolution.

The tablet’s full spec details weren’t given by Samsung, but the company rep did say that it was being powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor. Additionally, the front of the slate featured the same physical Home button and capacitive Recent Apps and Back buttons as other Samsung tablets.

So when will you be able to get your own super high-res tablet? Since this is a prototype, you probably won’t be buying the device being shown off by Samsung. However, a Qualcomm exec told TechRadar that 4K tablets could launch to the public before the end of 2014.

We’ll have to wait until these 4K tablets hit the market before we know what other specs they have or how much they cost. Considering that the devices will have super high-resolution displays, though, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve got a pretty high price tag to match.

Would you buy a tablet with a 4K display?
