Another day, another phone here in the mobile industry, and this time we’re looking at LG to wow us with their next unveiling of the alleged LG G3 during their event in London on Tuesday. The G3 is the follow-up to LG’s G2 flagship released last year, and with other flagships like the HTC One (M8) and Galaxy S5 already on the market, LG’s really going to need to make the G3 stand out somehow in order to make it more appealing.
For the most part we only have rumors and speculation for the time being, but we have some indication of what LG has up their sleeve this time around. For starters, we already know that the QuickWindow case that debuted alongside the G2 has been updated to be used with the new QuickCircle folio, a case and refreshed UI that (in my opinion) looks and seemingly functions better than the old one.
Aside from that, we have rumors aplenty of what all the G3 might feature. First and foremost you have a 5.5-inch QHD display, which would give the phone a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution, or a 1440p screen. On paper, that would mean that this phone would have the best smartphone screen in the world. The phone is also said to feature 3GB of RAM, a refreshed UI with a flatter design, perhaps an octacore processor, and a 16-megapixel camera with OIS+ (which stands for ‘optical image stabilization’) are all possibilities that have been thrown out there. The G3 will also reportedly be made out of aluminum.
With that being said, if all of those rumors turn out to be true, the G3 would crush the competition in the spec department.
I expect the G3 to be a completely worthy opponent of both the Galaxy S5 and the One (M8), as well as any other phones that are set to come out this year. I could even see this phone going head-to-head with the Galaxy Note 4 that should come out this fall, given that the phone is both large and powerful enough to rival such a device. It’s unfortunate that LG was among the manufacturers that follow the “bigger is better” trend when it comes to smartphones, because otherwise this phone may very well end up being the cream of the crop this year.
As I’ve said before, LG has made some major strides over these past few years for sure. The company used to be on the bottom of my list of manufacturers I would ever consider purchasing a smartphone from after several mishaps with some of their earlier Androids, but just like with HTC we can see that not all companies surrender when times are tough. LG is no longer a weak force to tamper with, and it looks like this year they might be bringing out the big guns to fight with.
My biggest concern is that the phone will be too big for people to really pick up on in the masses. Without focusing too much on myself, it seems like 5-inch displays, or close to it, is really where the sweet spot is for a lot of people. The 5.5-inch display that the phone will supposedly feature puts it awfully close to Note-sized, and even Samsung seems to be uninterested in making the new Note any larger than the 5.7-inch screen that the Note 3 features. Then again, the Note II featured a 5.5-inch display and was a pretty popular device, so I could very well be wrong about this one as well. Plus, LG also has those strange back buttons, which also supposedly make it easier to control the phone with one hand, so maybe that will help as well.
It’s hard to say at this point, but I am excited to see whether these rumors pan out or not. However, as I’ve learned over the years sometimes it’s best just to keep expectation levels low, just in case. Since nothing is for certain, it’s hard to tell exactly how this phone will hold up to the competition - but if these turn out to be true, this phone will certainly be one that people will talk about.
