Adoption of Android 4.4 KitKat has steadily been increasing in recent months, going from 1.8 percent in February to 2.5 percent in March and then jumping to 5.3 percent in April. This month saw KitKat’s biggest growth yet, with the newest version of Android claiming nearly 1/10th of all devices.
Google has updated its Android platform distribution stats, which surveys all devices that access the Play Store during a 7-day period ending on May 1. During that survey period, 8.5 percent of devices were running Android 4.4 KitKat. Meanwhile, Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean finished at 60.8 percent, a slight drop from its 61.4 percent share in April. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich also fell, dropping from 14.3 percent in April to 13.4 percent in May.
Moving on to pre-4.x versions of Android, we see that 3.2 Honeycomb is still clinging to the same 0.1 percent share that it’s had for several months now. Android 2.3 Gingerbread dropped from 17.8 percent in April to 16.2 percent in May, and Android 2.2 Froyo also dropped slight, going from 1.1 percent in April to an even 1.0 percent in May.
We’ve seen quite a few devices with KitKat lately, including flagship devices like the Galaxy S5 and One (M8) that came with it preloaded and existing phones like the Note 3 and Galaxy S 4 that got updated. That’s why it’s no surprise to see Android 4.4 experiencing such growth every month. It’s still a welcome sight, though, as it’s always good to see more consumers getting access to the latest and greatest software.
