Geeksphone has been trickling out information about its new OS-switching Revolution for months now. First came a teaser announcement, followed by a few spec details and then finally some actual images of the device itself. Today that stream of information keeps on a-flowin', as Geeksphone has revealed the Revolutions launch and pricing details.
According to the Spanish device maker, the Revolution will be available in Europe starting on Feb. 20 at a price of €289 ($395 USD). Early adopters may have their courage rewarded with a discount, though, as Geeksphone has teased that it's planning an online early bird sale that'll knock the price of the Revolution down to €269 ($367 USD). There's no word yet on when or if the Revolution will arrive in other territories.
As I mentioned before, the Geeksphone Revolution has the ability to switch between operating systems, giving users the ability to run either Android or Boot2Gecko, a version of Mozilla's Firefox OS. This MultiOS technology is completely supported by Geeksphone, and the company says that it intends on supporting the Revolution with up-to-date software that'll be made available over the air.
When it comes to the hardware that's powering this MultiOS handset, Geeksphone has opted to include a 4.7-inch IPS 960x540 display, 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras, 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2560 processor and 1GB of RAM. Internal storage is set at 4GB, though users can add more with a microSD card. The Revolution also includes support for 21Mbps HSPA+ support on the 850/900/1900/2100MHz airwaves as well as a 2000mAh battery.
While the Revolution may not boast the most face-meltingly high-end spec list that we've ever seen, its ability to easily switch between Android and Boot2Gecko makes it an intriguing piece of kit. Even if a user sticks with Android for most of his or her smartphone use, having the ability to easily checking in on Mozilla's Boot2Gecko efforts is a pretty nice option to have, and I'm sure that there will be at least a few folks that will be willing to drop a few hundred bucks to have that luxury.
