So, I'll admit that I've been pretty hard on TouchWiz lately. I went as far as to say that I disliked the Galaxy S 4, which is admittedly a pretty great device as a whole, simply because I'm not a big fan of Samsung's proprietary software. And, I've said more times than I can count that I want them to change up the software a bit, if for no other reason than we've been staring at the same user experience for a long time now.
(This is not the area that we should want to copy Apple, folks.)
With all of that being said over the course of a year or so, I could see why some folks would think I'm not really all that interested to see what Samsung unveils next year for their flagship devices. Admittedly, I wasn't all that excited to see the Galaxy S 4 get unveiled, either. As a work related device, sure, but not as a personal device.
But that's not really the case. Unlike the years prior, I think next year is going to be pretty exciting for the company, especially for the flagship devices. We've already heard that they plan on making some changes to TouchWiz, and we've been hearing rumors about metal phones for quite some time now, so I think 2014 is going to be interesting.
More to the point, Samsung has grown into holding the top spot when it comes to Android, so they've got some room to try new things. They have some wriggle room, if you will. They've taken the last few years to dominate the market, to grow their Galaxy S and Galaxy Note brand names, and to develop a ridiculous library of devices for consumers all over the world. It took time, but it worked out for them, and now they can change things up. I think it would be worth the risk.
So, if things are changing for the company, and for the consumer it should mean plenty of changes in the right direction.
I want to actually break the cycle here for a quick moment. Instead of talking about what Samsung needs to change, what absolutely has to be different in 2014 --from hardware to software-- I want to look at the other side of the spectrum. Because, as I just finished saying, Samsung has amassed a large following, sold a ridiculous amount of devices, and they've taken the mantle of King within the Android camp.
Obviously there are things working for them. Probably a lot of things. And that's what I want to focus on now, and what I'm curious about hearing from you. I want to know what you think Samsung doesn't need to change in 2014, and moving forward in general.
For me, and hear me out on this, it's the features that are inside TouchWiz. You heard me. Samsung's growth has been in part due to the fact that they shove their devices full of features, and while some folks may call them gimmicks, I don't think a lot of them are. Samsung wants to give you a premium experience thanks to the features they provide, and I don't want to see that change. Especially if the company is indeed moving away from plastic devices. I don't want to see them cut back on the software feature development, just because they're going with "premium" hardware.
That's one example, but now I want to know what you think Samsung doesn't need to change going forward. Whether it's the hardware (hey, even I can admit that there's nothing really wrong with plastic phones), the software, or any other feature. Let me know!
