Samsung: Galaxy Gear sales have reached 800,000 units [UPDATED]

As one of the first smartwatches from a major manufacturer to hit the market since the recent surge in wearable tech began, there's been a lot of interest surrounding the Samsung Galaxy Gear and how well it's been selling since launch. Today Samsung put an end to the questions and speculation, telling Reuters that it's moved 800,000 units of the Galaxy Gear since its debut two months ago. That's better than even Samsung expected the Gear would do, and the company says that it plans to try and push that number even higher with expanded holiday sales promos.

The Galaxy Gear isn't Samsung's first smartwatch offering, but it is the first that we've seen from the South Korean firm since the product category exploded in popularity thanks to Kickstarter projects like the Pebble and MetaWatch Strata. While the Gear initially caught some flak for things like limited device compatibility and less than stellar notifications, Samsung has been working to improve its wristwear in the months since its launch, and it looks like the company's hard work and efforts to promote the Gear are paying off. Do you have a Galaxy Gear? If so, are you happy with it?

UPDATE: Samsung Korea has told The Verge that the 800,000 figure is in relation to the number of Galaxy Gear smartwatches that it has shipped to retailers, not the number that has actually been sold to consumers.
