I'm going to start this off by making a small disclaimer: I try to come up with creative titles for my posts. Straight up honesty here though, sometimes they don't really sound that good. This is one of those times. I thought it was clever at first, but then I realized that maybe people wouldn't realize that it was a bad play on the lyrics from the holiday jingle "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" by Andy Williams. So, if you didn't catch that, just know there was a point to the title being so cheesy. It's the best I could do!
Okay, on to the important stuff.
So as many of you are aware, tomorrow marks Halloween. If you read my post I made earlier today about Lenovo's Yoga tablet, I made mention of this fact there as well. In case you can't tell, I'm pretty excited about it. This marks the official start of my favorite time of the year. Holidays, sales and, more specifically for the point of this article, the sales of electronics. This is the time of year that many smartphones, tablets and other mobile electronics go on sale for the holidays, and the time of year that many people hold off until to buy a new phone or an upgrade. It really is the best time to get a great deal on just about any electronic you've had your eye on all year.
When it comes to smartphones, you're probably going to find your best deals on phones that are subsidized. Different carriers generally hold different promotions, sometimes that offer a discount on certain devices. What's even better is that many carriers also realize that since it is nicknamed the "Season of Giving" that you can find plenty of buy one get one free deals, which works great if you have more than one person on your account available for an upgrade or you've been looking to add another line. You can also find some discounts, likely from third-party retailers, that take a chunk off of the full-price of certain smartphones for those that would rather not deal with subsidized pricing. Not all carriers or phones will have a discount, but it is the time of year that I see the most promotions going on.
Carriers are also known for having promotions that don't necessarily discount a certain one phone, but will have promotions for opening a new line or switching from one carrier to the next. It's good to keep an eye out for these if you've thought about switching carriers. A lot of the time, carriers will want an ETF if you leave before your contract is up, but sometimes these promotions can cover the cost of an ETF for you in the form of a credit from and towards your new carrier. You might still have to pay an ETF, but part of that cost could be considered covered by you not having to pay as much towards your new carrier.
Smartphones aren't the only things that go on sale though - in fact, tablets seem even more prone to sales than smartphones do. Generally when I buy a new tablet, I wait until the holidays to go hunting for a deal. Especially on the weekend after Thanksgiving, plenty of stores will have sales both in-store and online that can save you a pretty big chunk of money. However, I've been able to find some good sales as early as the first weekend after Halloween. You know how stores love to celebrate the winter holidays before Halloween is even over, and what better way to do so than by having sales upon sales? I can't say I hate it. Like I said, this is my favorite time of year, and the sales are definitely a contribution to why I love them so much.
If I didn't have the patience of a wasp, I would wait until the holidays to get my upgrade. However, since I do, it does make me somewhat sad that I'll be missing out on some great deals, at least when it comes to smartphones. But that's alright, because that gives me plenty of money to spend on tons and tons of tablets, all of which probably will go untouched for most of their days.
