Earnings season continues this morning with Nokia's third quarter 2013 results. The Finnish smartphone manufacturer reports that it sold a total of 8.8 million Lumia smartphones during the quarter, a healthy increase from the 7.4 million Lumias sold in Q2 2013 and a massive jump from the 2.9 million units it sold in Q3 2012. Nokia says that the increase in smart device sales is largely thanks to strong demand for the Lumia 520.

Looking at all of Nokia's mobile phone sales, the company says that it moved 64.6 million handsets during the third quarter. That includes the aforementioned 8.8 million Lumia units, 5.9 million full-touch Asha phones and other products. Of that 64.6 million total, the Asia Pacific region was responsible for 23.6 million unit sales, the Middle East and Africa came in second with 14.7 million and Europe was in third with 13.2 million units sold. Nokia reports that it sold 1.4 million phones in North America during Q3 2013.

Diving into Nokia's financials, Elop and Co. report that they pulled in an operating profit of €118 million ($162.45 million USD) during the quarter, which is much better than the €576 million operating loss that the company took in Q3 2012. Meanwhile, Nokia's revenue for the Q3 2013 finished at €5.66 billion ($7.79 billion USD). 

Overall it sounds like Nokia had itself a pretty nice quarter. Sales of Nokia's Windows Phone-powered Lumia models have steadily been increasing in recent quarters, finishing at 5.6 million in Q1 2013 and 7.4 million in Q2 2013, and this most recent quarter saw that total grow to 8.8 million. Oh, and that year-over-year jump from operating loss to profit helps as well. It's also worth noting that Q3 2013 Microsoft agreed to purchase Nokia's Devices & Services division for a total of €5.44 billion in a deal that's expected to close in Q1 2014. Sounds like a decent three months if you ask me.
