Alongside its announcement of the new Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320 phablets, Nokia today formally introduced us to its new full-on tablet offering. Dubbed the Lumia 2520, this Windows RT 8.1-powered slate sports a 10.1-inch 1080p AH-IPS display and 2-megapixel camera on its face, as well as a 6.7-megapixel camera with Zeiss optics on its backside. Sandwiched in between that screen and those cameras is a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor that's running the whole show.
Also packed inside the Lumia 2520's frame is 2GB RAM, 32GB of storage and a microSD slot that can support cards up to 32GB in size. Wireless connectivity options will include 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi as well as HSPA and 4G LTE, with the latter packing support for LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 13, 17 and 20. Rounding out the whole package is an 8000mAh battery.
Switching over to software, the Lumia 2520 features the recently-released Windows RT 8.1 operating system along with Microsoft's suite of Office applications. Also included is Nokia Music, the Finnish company's streaming music service that provides Lumia 2520 owners with unlimited ad-free music.
The Nokia Lumia 2520 is slated to launch in the fourth quarter of 2013 in matte black, glossy white, cyan and red color options. It won't be coming to market all alone, though, as Nokia has also created a Power Keyboard accessory for its new tablet. The Nokia Power Keyboard is a cover that wraps around the Lumia 2520 and includes a full keyboard, trackpad with gesture support and a battery that adds an additional five hours to the Lumia 2520's battery life.
We've long heard rumblings that a Nokia tablet was in the works, but it's taken until Nokia World 2013 to finally see the device formally unveiled. The fact that the Lumia runs Windows RT 8.1 might give some consumers pause, though, as Windows RT's app selection has been a point of criticism. Nokia is working to address that, announcing several apps that'll soon be available for its new tablet.
One such app is Dragon's Adventure, an app made in collaboration between Nokia and DreamWorks Animation. The app, inspired by the film How to Train Your Dragon, is a game that takes advantage of Nokia HERE Maps and LiveSight tech to show users landmarks from the movie while driving around in the real world. The game also includes a companion mode for Lumia smartphones so that others can participate in missions and add new challenges.
Another big app coming to the Lumia 2520 is Flipboard. The social magazine app is already confirmed to be Windows Phone 8-bound, but Nokia today revealed that it'll also be available for the Windows RT 8.1-powered Lumia 2520 at launch.
Nokia also says that it plans to launch its own Nokia Video Director app to the Lumia 2520. The app, which is "coming soon," features basic video editing tools and can also receive videos from Lumia smartphones. Some of the other apps that'll be available to the Windows RT 8.1-powered Lumia 2520 tablet include Nook, Asphalt 8: Airborne, EA Sports FIFA 14, Adobe Photoshop Express and Facebook.
UPDATE: Following AT&T's announcement that it plans to offer the Lumia 2520, Verizon has confirmed that it will sell Nokia's new Windows RT 8.1 tablet in both black and red. The Lumia 2520 is slated to launch on Verizon in Q4 2013 for an undisclosed price.
