Alongside its new full-size iPad, Apple today took the wraps off of the iPad mini with Retina display. As its name suggests, this new iPad mini sports a 7.9-inch 2048x1536 Retina display, which is the same screen resolution found on the new iPad Air. That new Retina display isn't the only major upgrade that Apple has included with the new iPad mini, though, as the updated 7.9-inch slate also features the same A7 processor as its larger sibling.
Also buried inside the iPad mini with Retina display is Multiple-In-Multiple-Out (MIMO) tech, which enables double the Wi-Fi performance of the previous iPad mini, and expanded 4G LTE support for more carriers around the globe. Finally, the backside of this shrunken iOS slate is home to a 5-megapixel camera, while the front houses a FaceTime HD camera that's said to be improved over the front-facing shooter found on the OG iPad mini.
The iPad mini with Retina display will be available for purchase "later in November" in space gray and silver color options. Pricing for the Wi-Fi-only models will start at $399 for 16GB of storage and go up to $499 for the 32GB model, $599 for the 64GB version and $699 for the roomy 128GB variant. Customers that'd like some 4G LTE goodness added to their new iPad mini with Retina display can expect to pay $529 for 16GB, $629 for 32GB, $729 for 64GB and $829 for 128GB of storage.
Just as with the iPad Air and iPad 2, Apple has decided to keep the first-generation iPad mini around to give the new iPad mini with Retina display some company. The original iPad mini will be available for $299 with 16GB of storage and Wi-Fi connectivity. A $429 cellular-enabled model will be offered with 16GB of space and support for either AT&T, Sprint or Verizon.
UPDATE: Apple's website has revealed the plan options that consumers will have if they decide to use their iPad Air or iPad mini with Retina display on T-Mobile. The page shows that Magenta will be giving customers 200MB of data per month for free, while heavier data users will be able to sign up for a 2.5GB data plan for $30 per month or a 4.5GB plan for $40 per month.
