So lately we've been seeing a lot of rumors, leaks and discussions pop up about the next generation Nexus device. Although I don't know exactly what the device is going to officially be called, we're going to keep things consistent and just call it the "Nexus 5". I'll be honest, I have absolutely no idea what the Nexus 5 is going to be like. The leaked images seem legit enough to give us an idea of what's going on with it, but officially, I have nothing. But I do know that I want that device, and for a couple of reasons.
I never really had a huge desire to go for a Nexus device before. I didn't really want the Galaxy Nexus, and although I thought the Nexus 4 was probably the coolest Nexus device I had seen for the price they were offering it at, I didn't really have a desire to get one for myself. But with the next Nexus device looking towards an imminent release soon, I can definitely say that I have my eye on this device. If the past is any indiciation of what we can expect from Google's next Nexus, I think I'm finally ready to take the plunge and get one.
The Nexus line of devices have recently been more well-known for their decent specs, build and especially their cheap price for an off-contract device. They're by no means the best devices that money can buy if specs are the most important thing to you in a phone, but if you're looking for a smartphone that gets the best bang for your buck then Nexus is a line that I would recommend checking out. With the Nexus 4's 8GB model having started off at just $299 for a device that also featured a 4.7-inch 1280x768 resolution screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, 2 GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera was definitely a good buy for 2012, so I'm also hoping that whatever Google has in store for this year is just as sweet of a deal.
Speaking of sweet, another reason I'm excited for the Nexus 5 is because, presumably, this will be one of the flagship devices that will ship with Android 4.4, also known as KitKat (like the delicious candy bar). The details on KitKat are also about as hush-hush as they can get, other than the fact that Google is stating that the software upgrade will be one that "everybody" can enjoy - so even older Android hardware can get in on some of the chocolatey goodness. I'm assuming that this means the software is a lot less "heavy" and will be able to run exceptionally well on newer devices. Of course, this is still just assuming, but I do know that I'm really excited to see what all KitKat will truly entail. I bet anything that it will be months before my HTC One will receive the update for it.
Last but not least, there's this little thing called Ubuntu for Phones that I've been waiting months for the release of, and according to Canonical Ubuntu for Phones will first be available for the Nexus line of devices. Given that the cues for Ubuntu for Phones are also leading up to an October release date, this nearly matches up with the (presumed) release of the Nexus 5. I have been excited about Ubuntu for Phones since it was first introduced during CES of 2013, but according to recent news it looks like we're not that far off from seeing the official release of the alternative mobile OS. The Nexus 5 would probably be able to run Ubuntu for Phones the best out of all of the Nexus devices, if I had to guess, which gives me even more incentive to put down the money to own one.
As long as the Nexus 5 follows in previous Nexus devices footsteps, I'm going to want one this time around. There are too many (presumably) good things going for it, and I for one am extremely pumped to see what next month brings us.
