Yesterday there was a bit of a hubbub surrounding Verizon and the LTE-enabled Nexus 7, as reports began popping up from users that were unable to activate their new tablet with Verizon service, even though Google has previously said that it would work on Verizon's LTE network. Verizon eventually explained that the new Nexus 7 had not yet been certified for use on its network, and today the big red carrier has expanded on that comment with a new statement.
Verizon says that the new Nexus 7 entered its certification process in August but has not yet completed all of the testing necessary for certification. This process usually takes four to six weeks, Verizon explains, and so it expects that the new Nexus 7 should be certified "shortly." Once that milestone is reached, Verizon plans to work with Google to ensure that the Nexus 7 can actually be activated on the Verizon network.
It's kind of strange to learn that, even though Google announced back in July that the new Nexus 7 would work with Verizon's LTE network, the device isn't actually capable of doing so at launch. The situation is likely pretty frustrating to anyone that snagged a Nexus 7 last week with the intent to use it with Verizon service, but the good news is that it sounds like it shouldn't be too much longer before the new Nexus 7 is finally able to surf Verizon's LTE airwaves.
