Following its official debut at WWDC earlier this year, Apple announced today that iOS 7 will be released to the public on Sept. 18. The update will be made available to the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 2, third and fourth-generation iPads, iPad mini and the fifth-generation iPod touch.
iOS 7 is the largest makeover that Apple's mobile platform has received to date, bringing with it a new user interface that includes refreshed icons and a several features for users to try out. One new feature of iOS 7 is Control Center, which allows a user to swipe up from the bottom of his or her device's display and fiddle with the phone's settings, control music playback, jump into calculator or turn on a flashlight.
Another major addition to iOS 7 is iTunes Radio. This streaming service takes advantage of the iTunes Store music catalog to provide the listener with over 200 curated stations to choose from, and users will also be able to create and edit their own stations.
Also included with iOS 7 is lock screen Notification Center access, a new-look Multitasking menu that displays cards of running apps, AirDrop sharing, full-screen browsing in Safari and more. Finally, Apple revealed today that it plans to offer its iPhoto, iMovie, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers apps for free to iOS 7 hardware activated after Sept. 1.
