Microsoft made waves last year when it announced that it was entering the tablet game with its own-brand Surface RT and Surface Pro devices. Now it looks like Microsoft is planning to adhere to the yearly refresh cycle that we see so often in the mobile space, as NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has revealed that his firm is working with Microsoft on a second-generation Surface.
Huang recently told CNET that he feels the lack of an official Outlook app at launch caused a problem for the original Surface RT, which was powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 3 processor. The CEO promises that that's changing with the next model though, saying that NVIDIA and Microsoft are "going to bring it with the second-generation Surface." Huang didn't elaborate on exactly what might make this new Surface tick, but he did promise that he and NVIDIA are "working really hard on it."
The original Surface RT wasn't exactly a breakaway success, with Microsoft recently revealing that it had to take a $900 million write-down for the device. Apparently that hasn't deterred Ballmer and Co. from taking what it's learned from the original Surface models and applying it to new versions, though. There's still a lot about that we don't know about Microsoft's plans for its new Surface tablets, but if NVIDIA is involved, it wouldn't be a shock to see at least one model with a Tegra 4 processor at its core.
