It seems that Sprint has decided that a good way to help us all wake up this morning is by serving up a heaping helping of numbers. The big yellow carrier announced its results for the second quarter of 2013 this morning, revealing that it gained a total of 194,000 postpaid subscribers and lost 486,000 prepaid users and 228,000 wholesale customers. The Nextel platform, which shut down at the end of June, finished with a loss of 1.315 million users. Sprint finished Q2 2013 with a total of 53.376 million subscribers.
Sprint also took a moment to touch on its iPhone sales for the quarter. The operator says that it sold a total of 1.4 million iPhones during Q2 2013, a slight drop from the 1.5 million units it moved in Q1 2013. Sprint says that 41 percent of its 1.4 million iPhone sales were made to new customers.
Looking at the financial side of things, Sprint achieved a record quarterly revenue of $7.2 billion and a record postpaid ARPU (average revenue per user) of $64.20. However, the carrier also took a pretty big hit in the form of a $1.6 billion net loss for Q2 2013, which includes a $623 million noncash charge related to its Nextel network shutdown.
Sprint rounded out its list of announcements this morning with some big news regarding its 4G LTE network. Sprint has revealed that its LTE service is now available in 41 new markets, including the Philadelphia, Pa., Jacksonville, Fla., Oakland, Calif., and Portland, Ore. This latest expansion brings Sprint's LTE coverage up to 151 markets. The full list of newly-activated locales is available at the bottom of this post.
Overall it looks like Sprint had a bit of a rough quarter, though that's not a total surprise considering that the carrier shut down its Nextel network during that time. Sprint does note that it's recaptured over 4 million Nextel subscribers since early 2011, though, so the end of the Nextel network didn't completely drain it of all of those push-to-talk users. Another positive aspect of today's news is Sprint's LTE expansion, which brings LTE service to quite a few new subscribers and continues the LTE race that's going on between Sprint and T-Mobile.
