HP working on a new smartphone that will offer a 'differentiated experience,' says exec

It's certainly been a while since we've seen any new smartphones from HP, but a company executive has promised that the Veer and Pre 3 won't be the last handsets we see emerge from the HP labs. Yam Su Yin, HP's Director of Consumer PC and Media Tablets for Asia Pacific, has told the Press Trust of India that her firm is prepping a new smartphone device. "It would be silly if we say no. HP has to be in the game," the exec said. Yam wouldn't divulge any details of the handset, but she did tease that the upcoming product will offer a "differentiated experience."

HP was quiet about its mobile plans for quite a while after it "discontinued operations" on webOS hardware in late 2011, but the company recently returned to the mobile world with its Android-powered Slate 7 tablet. Considering how large a market smartphones are, it's no surprise to hear that HP is planning to re-enter the segment. What will be interesting is seeing exactly how HP is planning "differentiate" its smartphone in order to make it stand out from the crowd. We can only speculate about that for now, but I'm sure that a number of consumers would be happy if HP simply slapped Android onto a device with a Pre 3-style portrait sliding keyboard and called it a day.
