Details of 'Google Play Games' confirmed by updated Google Play Services APK

Remember those hints about a Google Play Games service that we got wind of last month? Today more details of Google's gaming-centric offering have surfaced that back those rumors up. The folks at Android Police have gotten hold of the new Google Play Services version 3.1.36, which is quite a jump up from the version 3.0.27 that many folks are currently using. The site was able to access the Settings portion of Play Games, which contains a notifications toggle and controls for who can send notifications to the user.

After diving into the new Google Play Services with Nova Launcher, Android Police was able to find references to some other Play Games features. Just like last month's leak suggested, Play Games will include support for synced game saves, matchmaking, game invitations, achievements and leaderboards.

As phones and tablets get more and more powerful, mobile gaming has been growing and consumers are increasingly using their mobile devices as their sole gaming machines. This trend doesn't seem to show any signs of slowing down, and so it only makes sense for mobile platforms to have their own dedicated gaming services, like Game Center on iOS.

We still don't have a ton of information on how Google Play Games will work, but so far it looks like it could be a good way for Android gamers to connect with others and get more out of their games with features like achievements and leaderboards. The good news is that with Google I/O just around the corner, it may not be long before Play Games and all of its gaming goodies are officially revealed. Stay tuned.
