After starring in an image leak and appearing at the FCC earlier this year, the Pantech Perception has now been officially announced for Verizon Wireless. Set to arrive both in stores and online on April 25, the Perception will feature a price tag of $99.99 with a two-year contract and $50 mail-in rebate. For their hard-earned $100, buyers will be getting an Android smartphone with a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display, 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras as well as 16GB of built-in storage.
One of the main software features of the Perception is its "Motion Sense" technology. Verizon explains that Motion Sense will allow users to wave their hands over the handset to perform different tasks such as answering a call, swiping through contacts, change a song that's being played or to scroll through a photo library. The Perception comes preloaded with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but Verizon says that an update to Jelly Bean will be released "soon."
The Perception looks a bit like the Pantech Discover that launched on AT&T last year, featuring a similar display and 4G LTE connectivity but a slightly toned-down camera. While we'll have to wait to get our hands-on with the Perception before making any judgments about it, its 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display and $100 price tag make it look like it could be a nice Android handset for Verizon customers in the hunt for a new smartphone that's wallet-friendly. Here's to hoping that those folks that do decide to pull the trigger on a Perception will indeed be bumped up to Jelly Bean soon after their purchase.
