Tonight Samsung officially took the wraps off of the Galaxy S 4, and along with a spec sheet that includes a 5-inch 1080p display and 13-megapixel camera, the device also includes a handful of new features like Air View and Smart Pause. However, just because Samsung's got itself a shiny new phone, that doesn't mean that it'll be ditching Galaxy S III users.
Nick DiCarlo, Samsung's VP of portfolio planning, confirmed to PCMag tonight that several of the software enhancements found on the Galaxy S 4 will be brought to the Galaxy S III. "Anything that we can do that's not dependent on hardware like infrared, we'll definitely bring to all the flagship devices," DiCarlo explained. No other details were given.
Samsung has previously said sales of the Galaxy S III have surpassed 30 million units, so it's good (though not entirely surprising) to hear that the company intends to treat those users with some of the new features found on the Galaxy S 4. It's also worth noting that DiCarlo said "flagship devices" in his statement, suggesting that some Galaxy hardware that's not the S III will receive some new functionality as well. Exactly what that functionality will be remains to be seen, but some recently-leaked Galaxy S III screenshots included mentions of both the new Smart Pause and Smart Scroll features found on the Galaxy S 4, so those are certainly two possibilities.
