With 2012 winding down, Sprint today provided us with an update on how its network upgrade progress is going, both when it comes to its 4G LTE rollout and its 3G upgrades. Sprint's LTE network is now available in 49 markets, a number that it reached with yesterday's expansion. Looking ahead, there are nearly 150 areas that'll be gaining Sprint LTE coverage in the coming months. Sprint has named many of those recently, and today it added another batch of 36 cities to the "LTE Coming Soon" list, all of which can be found at the bottom of this post.
Sprint's 4G LTE network first launched in mid-July 2012. The carrier has been activating the service in batches of new areas since then, with the most recent expansion bringing it to cities like Indianapolis, Ind. and York, Pa. There are a number of locales that are set to gain Sprint LTE coverage soon, and while customers in those areas don't know exactly when their service will be going live, the good news is that they know that it's coming and can plan their next hardware purchase accordingly.
Sprint has also been working to upgrade its 3G network to give its customers better signal strength and voice quality along with fewer dropped calls. The improved 3G coverage is currently available in over 70 markets, Sprint says, including Asheville, N.C., Philadelphia, Pa., Hudson, N.Y., and Santa Barbara, Calif. While 3G network improvements may not be quite as exciting as newly-lit 4G LTE service, these upgrades are still important since not everyone has an LTE-capable device, and so it's good to see Hesse and Co. continue to work on its 3G service while simultaneously rolling out LTE.
