Bad news this morning for lovers of large Windows Phone devices, as a new report claims that HTC had previously planned to make a big Windows Phone 8 device but recently decided to scrap the handset. According to Bloomberg's "person familiar with the project," HTC has killed its plans for a large-screened Windows Phone 8 model because its screen resolution would've been lower than that on competing phones, including Android models from HTC and Samsung. Details on the phone itself are light, but it's said that HTC's large Windows Phone 8 device would've been introduced sometime next year.
HTC previously released two big Windows Phone handsets on AT&T dubbed the Titan and Titan II, both of which featured 4.7-inch 800x480 displays. Windows Phone 8 brought with it support for higher-res screens, going up to 1280x768 and 1280x720, but Microsoft's latest OS doesn't currently support the 1080p screens that we're starting to see on Android handsets like HTC's DROID DNA.
This news is definitely a bit of a bummer for Windows Phone fans that've been hoping for a Titan-sized Windows Phone 8 device from HTC, especially after the arrival of the 8X and 8S, which have received praise for their designs and colors. It's not clear when we might see a new Windows Phone device from HTC, but it appears that any customers hoping for a big WP8 handset from the company may have to settle for the 8X and its 4.3-inch 1280x720 display.
