GoSmart Mobile confirmed to be new T-Mobile prepaid brand, undergoing testing in "select markets"

Hot on the heels of a rumor that T-Mobile USA may be prepping a new prepaid brand dubbed GoSmart Mobile, the magenta operator has chimed in on the matter. T-Mobile today confirmed to FierceWireless that it is indeed testing a prepaid service known as GoSmart Mobile, with the new brand currently being offered "in select markets." There's no word on exactly what those markets may be, but T-Mo did say that it'll be observing how the tests go and will then use that information to help it come to a decision about a possible national launch of GoSmart Mobile "sometime in 2013."

A quick visit to GoSmart Mobile's website shows that it is now live, advertising a $30/month plan with unlimited talk and text, a $35/month plan with unlimited talk, text and web and a $45 plan with unlimited talk, text and web, 5GB of which will be at 3G speeds. GoSmart is offering an $8 SIM card kit and a $69 Alcatel OT 838, a portrait QWERTY handset with a 2-megapixel camera, 2.4-inch screen and dedicated Facebook button. The carrier's website also says that customers can bring their own unlocked device onto GoSmart Mobile, though it notes that BlackBerrys, Sidekicks and micro-SIM devices "may experience limited functionality."

The fact that the highest-tier plan offers 3G speeds rather than 4G may turn off some power users, but GoSmart may be worth checking out if you're looking to save some cash and are able to take part in the tests, especially for folks that can save more cash by bringing their own hardware onto the service. As I said before, GoSmart's website is live as of this writing, and all of the pages appear to be ready for browsing. You can find a link to the site at the bottom of this post. Anyone's interest piqued by GoSmart Mobile based on what we've learned so far?
