Heads up, AT&T customers, because today the big blue carrier made a couple of announcements that you may want to be aware of. The first is that, a day after AT&T expanded its 4G LTE network to a handful of cities across the U.S., the coverage has expanded to one more locale. AT&T today confirmed that its LTE service is now live in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, bringing coverage to residents of towns like Minneapolis and St. Paul.
The second bit of AT&T news is for international travelers. AT&T today announced some new global roaming packages, including additions for calling, messaging and data use. Due to arrive on November 16, here's how the new offerings break down:
- Calling: AT&T introduced new Travel Minutes packs that offer different minute allotments for different parts of the world. There's a Canada and Mexico Travel Minutes pack, one with Europe Travel Minutes and another with Rest of World Travel Minutes. Each pack contains three different minute buckets for customers to choose from. A couple of examples include 80 minutes for $30 per month in the Canada and Mexico pack or a 200 minutes for $120 per month option in the Europe pack.
- Messaging: There's a new Global Messaging 600 pack that allows customers to send 600 text, picture and video messages from over 140 countries for $60 per month. The Global Messaging 600 option replaces the Global Messaging 500 plan that was introduced last year. AT&T also offers Global Messaging 50 and 200 packs for $10 and $30, respectively.
- Data: AT&T customers that sign up for the carrier's 300MB or 800MB Data Global Add-on will have access to the AT&T Wi-Fi International app for 1GB of free Wi-Fi access each month. The app allows users to access AT&T International Wi-Fi hotspots, which will be available in major cities in 14 countries and launch and will expand in 2013.
Looks like AT&T customers that plan to travel abroad and want to sign up for minutes, messages or megabytes through their carrier will have several more options after tomorrow. As for today's other news, the launch of LTE in the Twin Cities gives AT&T another major addition to its list of LTE-covered towns, and I'm sure that the residents there are happy to have access to the service, especially with the recent arrival of devices like the iPhone 5 and Galaxy Note II.
