Earlier this month, Google's own Andy Rubin revealed that the total number of Android device activations had crossed the 500 million mark, which is a big milestone for the platform. Now Google has announced that its little green robot has reached another noteworthy achievement. The company confirmed today on its Official Android Blog that Google Play has crossed 25 billion downloads, adding that the store is now home to 675,000 apps. To celebrate the occasion, Google will be slashing the prices of apps from developers like Gameloft, EA and others down to 25 cents over the next five days, and it'll be offering collections like 25 banned books and 25 influential albums for special prices as well.
Google has held several similar promotions in the past, including one that cut the price of select apps to just 10 cents when the app store formerly known as Android Market hit 10 billion downloads. It's not yet clear which apps we might see get put on sale this time around, but Google says to check back with the Play store later today to check out the sales, so Android bargain hunters ought to keep an eye on Google Play throughout the day.
