Sony has been fairly quiet in the world of tablets since it launched the Tablet S and Tablet P, but according to some newly-leaked presentation slides, the company's got something up its sleeve for later this year. Slides posted by an xda-developers user show that Sony may be prepping a new Xperia Tablet as a follow-up to the Tablet S. The Xperia Tablet looks to feature the same folded-over magazine look as the S, but with a thinner body that's 8.8mm thick at one end and 11.85mm thick at the other. That body is also said to be aluminum and splash-proof.
A thinner design isn't the only tweak that the Xperia Tablet will have received compared to its predecessor, as there are also reportedly a number of spec improvements. Inside is a Tegra 3 processor, up from the Tegra 2 chip in the Tablet S, as well as an option for 64GB of internal storage. Other enhancements include 8-megapixel rear and 1-megapixel front cameras, a 6,000mAh battery and "ICS or later" for its operating system. The Xperia Tablet will also feature a 9.4-inch 1280x800 display and SD card slot. Another slide in the leak shows that pricing may be set at $449.99 for the 16GB mode, $549.99 for the 32GB version and $649.99 for the most capacious 64GB variant. The poster of the slides also mentions a possible September availability.
Along with the Xperia Tablet itself, the leaked slides also show a number of the device's accessories. For example, it appears that Sony is prepping a cover that'll double as a kickstand/keyboard combo that may be priced at $99.99. There's also expected to be a premium cover for $79.99, carrying cover for $59.99, docking stand for $99.99, regular stand for $24.99 and a dock speaker for $119.99.
It's good to see Sony give its Tablet S successor some important spec bumps, like a Tegra 3 processor and a bigger battery, while also making the device itself thinner. Here's to hoping that once this Xperia Tablet finally does land on shelves, Sony decides to go with the "or later" portion of its statement on the slate's Android version and give it Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
